HANSEN, B. C., K.-L. C. JEN AND P. KRIBBS. Regulation of food intake in monkeys: Response to caloric dilution. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 26(3) 479--486, 1981.--Ability to regulate level of energy intake was studied in adult rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) using calorically diluted diets. Twenty-four hour access to a complete liquid diet was provided via leakproof gravity feeders. The addition of water provided 4 caloric concentrations over the range of 0.5 to 1.35 kcal/ml. Average caloric intake per kg body weight was 84 _+ 0.7 kcal/kg (mean _+ SE). Seven of the eight monkeys maintained a constant caloric intake by adjusting oral intake in response to randomly ordered but sustained changes in caloric density. One monkey ingested a significantly higher caloric load while receiving the highest density diet. Rates of compensation for dilution following each diet change varied widely, occurring over periods of 3 days to 2 weeks. It was concluded that individual monkeys vary significantly in the rate of adjustment to caloric dilution, and thus long term studies must be used in studying controls of feeding in monkeys.

Choice of Diets of Differing Caloric Density by Normal and Hyperphagic Rats.

When bilateral lesions are made in the ventromedial nuclei of the hypothalamus, striking and characteristic changes are produced. These effects, first demonstrated in the rat, include an enormous increase in food intake (hyperphagia) and the development of obesity (Hetherington & Ranson, 1939; Brobeck, Tepperman & Long, 1943). The hyperphagia occurs immediately after the operation, the rat eati...

Control of food intake and meal patterns in monkeys.

Control of food intake and meal patterns in monkeys. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 27(5) 803-810, 1981.-Feeding patterns have been studied in 10 adult male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) adapted to primate restraint chairs for physiological studies. Using an automated computer-monitored liquid diet feeding system, feeding behavior was studied under 8 hour and 24 hour feeding schedules. Caiorie/kg intake was...

The comparative effect of fasting with and without caloric restriction in Rat on oxidative stress parameters

Introduction: Fasting, like Islamic Ramadan Fasting, has been associated with health benefits. Islamic Ramadan fasting, a form of caloric restriction (CR) or alternate day fasting that. Studies suggest a comparable effect of ADF and caloric restriction. Despite the fact that fasting can be considered as a form of dietary restriction, fasters tend to have difficulty to reduce their food intake d...

Antagonism of Corticotrophin-Releasing Factor Type 1 Receptors Attenuates Caloric Intake of Free Feeding Subordinate Female Rhesus Monkeys in a Rich Dietary Environment

Social subordination in macaque females is a known chronic stressor and previous studies have shown that socially subordinate female rhesus monkeys consume fewer kilocalories than dominant animals when a typical laboratory chow diet is available. However, in a rich dietary environment that provides access to chow in combination with a more palatable diet (i.e. high in fat and refined sugar), su...

Nervous regulation of food intake.

Q LORIC BALANCE depends upon the regulation of biologic energy exchange. Four important variables are concerned in energy balance : ( 1) food intake, (2) energy storage, (3) energy utilization through activity or work and (4) loss of energy in the production of heat. The caloric balance would thus be regulated by the various mechanisms which regulate the caloric intake in the form of food intak...
